What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or CBT is a type of psychotherapy that involves talking about your thoughts and feelings and changing your behaviour and reactions to these thoughts and feelings.

CBT is thought to be effective for certain mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, personality disorders, addictions, mood and psychotic disorders and OCD.

The basic idea behind CBT is that changing your thoughts will lead to a change in your feelings and behaviour.

If you:

  • like a structured approach, with clear goals and aims

  • prefer the therapist to direct the conversation

  • prefer practical solutions to current problems

  • can devote your time to hourly sessions that last between 6 – 24 weeks

then CBT might suit you.
