What is Counselling?
Counselling gives people an opportunity to speak about their troubles and problems to someone without advice, co-ercion or suggestions. It is usually a short -term arrangement, and it tends to deal with relationships with either oneself or others in settings such as family, school or careers etc.
Counsellors are usually non-judgemental, and help to clarify situations for the patients by reflecting on what they have said, and allow the patients to reach to certain conclusions on their own. Most patients who see counsellors do not have pervasive mental conditions – instead, they might use counselling as a short term intervention for something that is occuring in their lives at the moment.
- do not have a mental health diagnosis
- would like to seek short term treatment for an existing problem
- would like someone to talk to who is non-judgemental
- are prepared to see someone once a week to talk about your problems
please contact your gp who may refer you to a counsellor.
